Hawaiian Quilt SAL

Cattinka hat vor ein paar Tagen auf ihrem Blog zum Hawaiian Quilt SAL aufgerufen. Das war für mich DIE Gelegenheit endlich einmal die Tasche zu nähen, die ich mir schon vor Jahren vorgenommen habe. Das Muster ist von Kathie Mum aus einer japanischen Quiltzeitschrift. Die Stoffe hatte ich auch schon seit einer Ewigkeit im Schrank, also konnte es auch gleich losgehen.

Im Gegensatz zu Cattinka ist mein Ansatz zum Hawaiian Quilt ziemlich Low-Tech. Zuersteinmal habe ich das Muster auf die richtige Größe kopiert und dann die Linien auf der Vorderseite und auf der Rückseite der Kopie mit einem Filzstift nachgemalt, somit habe ich auch das Spiegelbild. Weiter ging es zum Fenster - die arme Leute Version einer Lightbox. (Die steht schon auf der Wunschliste ganz oben!) Hier wurden die Linien auf die rechte Seite des Stoffen durchgepaust.

Cattinka is hosting a Hawaiian Quilt Sal at her Blog. This was THE opportunity for me to finally sew the Bag I saw a couple of years back in a Japanese Magazine. I already had the pattern and the fabric and no time to lose to start!

Opposite to Cattinka my approach is pretty low-tech. I made an enlarged Copy and traced the lines on both sides of the Copy so I ended up with the mirror images as well. On the next step I stuck the copy and  fabric on my window – a poor people’s approach to a light box. (Which is on place 1 of my wish list) I traced the lines to the right side of the fabric.

Danach habe ich den hellblauen Stoff mit einem grünen Stoff hinterlegt und einmal in der Mitte mit Nähmaschine mit sehr weiten Stichen fixiert. Diese Naht wird dann am Ende wieder aufgetrennt. Mit Heftfaden wurde nun ca. ein halber Zentimeter innerhalb des Musters die Linien mit großzügigen Vorstichen nachgestickt.

Afterwards I put the light blue fabric above the green one and sew a line with large stitches  through the middle. This line is going to be ripped once the applique is done.  The next step was to tack about a quarter inch inside the lines of the pattern.

Schlußendlich ging es endlich zum applizieren. Das Schöne bei dieser Methode ist, das man immer nur soviel Stoff schneidet wie man gerade applizieren möchte, der Rest bleibt intakt. Man muß nur höllisch aufpassen aus Unachtsamkeit nicht auch den unteren Stoff mitzuschneiden.

After that I could begin to applique. I like this method, because you only cut a small portion of the fabric as you go. You only need to be extremely careful not to cut the fabric underneath as well. I prefer this kind of applique with large area motifs.

Ich hatte ja nur mit dem gefilzten und bestickten Stein gerechnet und habe mich sehr über die anderen Kleinigkeiten gefreut! Ganz besonders haben mir die (Kermik?)Steine und Glasstücke vom Strand gefallen. Es ist unglaublich wie glatt deren Textur ist und wie schön der Matte Schimmer. Die blauen Muscheln werden sicher ihren Weg auf ein Kreuzstichbild finden.

I expected only the felted and stitchted stone und was thrilled about the other things she put in the parcel as well. I particulary liked the (pottery?)stones and glas pieces from the beach. It is incredible how smooth the texter of them ist and how soft the colors shimmer. The blue shells wil certainly find their way onto a cross stitch project.

 

Auf dem obigen Bild fehlt der kleine Andenkenteller mit Dionyseus, denn der wurde gleich passend in meine Bücherecke mit den Werken zur griechischen Mythologie gestellt.

The small souvenier plate with a picture of Dionyseus was not in the picture above, because I immediately placed him on my shelf with the books about ancient greek mythology.

Das ist ein einfaches und schönes Sockenmuster welches mit dem pastellfarbenen Garn sehr schön zur Geltung kommt. Mit diesem Muster werde ich mir sicherlich noch ein Paar stricken.

This is a simple but beautiful sock pattern and it goes perfectly with the pastel blue of the yarn. I will certainly knit another pair with this pattern.

Zitronat

Ich beziehe schon seit einigen Jahren mein Gemüse von einem Bauern im Umfeld von Wien. Praktischerweise vertreibt dieser auch Fleisch, Fisch, Milchprodukte und Brot von lokalen Unternehmen, sowie Bioprodukte aus Europa. Fein daran ist, das er vor die Haustür liefert und ich nur im Internet bestellen muß und dann die Kiste von der Haustür bis zum Kühlschrank tragen muß.

Letzte Woche hatte er Zitronatzitronen aus Italien im Sortiment und ich habe mir gleich ein paar davon bestellt.

I get my vegetables from a farmer not far from Vienna. Conveniently he also delivers meat, fish, bread and diary products from small local enterprises as well as organic products from europe directly to my doorstep. Last week he had a special variety of lemons on offer. The kind you can make candied lemon peel.

Die Zitronat-Zitronen sind im Vergleich zu den normalen Zitronen riesig und so habe ich zum Probieren einmal 4 Stück ausgewählt.

Um Zitronat herzustellen müssen die Früchte zuerst geschält werden. Das Fruchtfleisch ist eher sauer und geschmacklos. Ich habe es aber zum Mischen mit Mineralwasser aufgehoben. Die dicke weiße Schicht muß weggeschnitten werden, da sie sehr bitter ist. Zum Kandieren verwendet man nur die äußere Schale mit einem dünnen weißen Rand.

These lemons are very large and I choose 4 pieces to candy. The inner pulp is quite tasteless and sour. I left it for my mineral water. The thick white peel must be cut away as it is terribly bitter. You use only the yellow peel with a thin white edge.

Die Schalen werden dann in reichlich Wasser mit ein wenig Salz (ca 1 TL) für ca. 10 Minuten gekocht, damit die Bitterstoffe aus den Schalen verschwinden. Wer auf Nummer Sicher gehen möchte, schüttet das Wasser weg, setzt neues Wasser auf und kocht die Schalen noch einmal für ein paar Minuten.

You cook the peels in lots of water with bit of salt (1 teaspoon) for about 10 minutes. This releases the bitter out of the peels. If you want to be on the safe side, drain the water and cook the peels in fresh water for few more minutes.

Danach werden die Schalen gewogen. Genausviel Zucker wie das Gewicht der Schalen wird mit einem 1 Glas Wasser aufgekockt und solange gekocht, bis der Zucker Fäden zieht. Danach kommen die Zitronenschalen in die Zuckerlösung und werden bei schwacher Hitze ca. 40-60 Minuten gekocht. Die Schalen sollten nun glasig aussehen. Die Zitronenschalen aus dem Zuckersirup heben und auf einem Kuchengitter oder auf Backpapier(mit Zucker bestreut, damit die Schalen nicht zusammenkleben) trocknen lassen - das kann einige Tage dauern.

Then weigh the drained peels. The same weight of sugar and a glas of water is then cooked. When the sugar solution pull strings if you lift it with a spoon, it is ready to mix the peels into it. With low temperature cook the peels for about 40-60 minutes. The peels should look glassy by now. Lift them out of the sugar sirup and place them on a cooling rack or on baking paper.(place some sugar on it, so that the peel won't stick togehter) Let them dry - this can take up a few days.

Wenn die Schalen nicht mehr nass sind, aber auch nicht zu trocken werden sie in kleine Quadrate geschitten und mit etwas Zuckerin einem luftdichten Glas aufbewahrt.

When the peels or not wet, but not too dry either you can cut them into small squares and store them with some sugar in a air tight can.

Lots and lots of tiny petit point stitches...but it's also a lot of fun to stitch!

Silberwolke

Ein weiterer federleichter Lace-Schal ist fertig geworden! Das Garn für diesen Schal ist sehr voluminös und mit dem kleinen Cashmereanteil kuschelweich und warm.

I finished another featherlight lace-shawl. The wool for this shwal has a very volumnious texture and is because of the small cashmere content very warm and cuddlingly soft.

Grow your blog 2015

Today is the Grow your blog party hosted by Vicky at 2bagsfull. I like to take part at it and looking forward to find interesting blogs from people arround the world.

My name is Christina, I live in Vienna and my blog is some kind of diary for all the hobbies that are important to me. Even though I consider my english not that bad, I prefer to blog more pictures than text. So if you have a little time I hope you enjoy my fotonovela.

What will you find here?
First of all, a lot of my needlework projects, like knitting

and crochet things, preferably doilies

and patchwork projects.

 Be aware, that you will find a lot of WIP's here and probably no further update on it for a decade or so... ;-)

But eventually all the projects will be finished - even If some mean flatmates are determined to sabotage it.

Another big love is my garden.

I grow mostly vegetables and herbs. On the patio there are mediterrenean plants and to please the eye  there are also some flowers. I will tell you about planting

which leades me to my next obsession - my cats. The porch climber above is Daphne, she is 8 years old and a european shorthair with the skeleton of an asian breed.


Amy might have some DNA form a britisch shorthair, but is mostly simple housecat too and with her 10 years the senior. My beauty has the rare silver tabby in her fur and all three colors on her tiny nose.

The newest addition is Perseus the very young stray who moved in a couple of month ago. He is so full of mischief!

Garfield is a stray who visits me for his breakfast and dinner every day. Allthough he's been here for five years I am still not allowed to touch him.

As much as I like to devote my life to my hobbies I also have and unfortunately need a fulltime job, so please be not upset if you find quite large breaks between the posts.

Jacke mit Spitzenteil

Diese Jacke ist nun fertig geworden. Der Spitzenteil hat ganz schön viel Garn "gefressen", dafür wurde sie in einem Stück gestrickt und ich habe mir das nervtötende Zusammennähen erspart.
